Why are you on the internet?

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be;
and that which is done is that which shall be done:
and there is no new thing under the sun.
Is there any thing whereof it may be said,
See, this is new?
it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent was more subtil
than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.
And he said unto the woman,
Yea, hath God said,
Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent,
We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said,
Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman,
Ye shall not surely die:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof,
then your eyes shall be opened,
and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
and that it was pleasant to the eyes,
and a tree to be desired to make one wise,
she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,
and gave also unto her husband with her;
and he did eat.
And the eyes of them both were opened,
and they knew that they were naked;
and they sewed fig leaves together,
and made themselves aprons.

1 Timothy 2:11-15
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
But I suffer not a woman to teach,
nor to usurp authority over the man,
but to be in silence.
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived,
but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing,
if they continue in faith and charity
and holiness with sobriety.

1 Timothy 5:11-15
But the younger widows refuse:
for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ,
they will marry;
Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
And withal they learn to be idle,
wandering about from house to house;
and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies,
speaking things which they ought not.
I will therefore
that the younger women marry,
bear children, guide the house,
give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
For some are already turned aside after Satan.

Titus 2:3-5
The aged women likewise,
that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness,
not false accusers, not given to much wine,
teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober,
to love their husbands,
to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home,
good, obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Some thoughts:

  1. The internet is new, but all its potential is not.  It is a powerful tool, like a bagel slicer, which can be used for great benefit or cause great injury.
  2. Christian women who desire to be a helper to their husbands can be deceived though they mean well and certainly mean to be a helper.  This deception can happen anywhere, even on the internet.
  3. The authority in our lives should be recognized as a gatekeeper, not Google Safesearch.  The authority in our lives will give account to God.  We must find out what usurping means and not do it.  God’s Word seems to tell us that usurping is a step towards our deception.
  4. One prerequisite for internet use is spare time.  However, sometimes our time is not truly spare.  Equally harmful is the problem of distracted focus.
  5. On the internet or not, christian women do well to seek and to encourage one another in the crucial pursuit of things that adorn sound doctrine.  God has delegated this teaching and encouraging task to the so-called aged women.  They will not seek to speak what is popular.  They will love their husbands and children and be those who seek to be faithful to the calling they have received.

Ephesians 5:15-17

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.  Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
