Obvious but profound

We have had a busy week and are still struggling with illness too! So it looks like another week until we are ready for a meeting.

But...

At the homeschool conference we attended this week, a speaker made a very good point with broad application, especially in the modesty issue, and especially in the teaching our children about modesty issue. And especially in the rules for modesty area.

We hope to get more specific about considerations in dress. It is not something to be fearful about. We all need advice and should appreciate advice and that is what we are to seek and give as we grow into Titus 2 women. BUT the Bible is very clear, like we were seeing in Colossians, the whole point is something in our lives that is living and growing, because of the work of the Spirit.

We all see the need of growing in godliness, in holiness, in separation from the world. Being a peculiar people...that means in comparison to the norm, means something tangible and visible. But we realize we are aiming for a life transformation, and that comes from the act of being a living sacrifice (Romans 12). That reality is produces fruit...

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of
the truth of the gospel;
Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world;
and bringeth forth fruit,
as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it,
and knew the grace of God in truth
:
Colossians 1:3-6

(Wow, I didn't remember that verse was in Colossians, too!)

Anyway, Lord willing, we will talk about other issues, dresses, pants, bathing suits, jewelry. Bring it on!

But any attempts at modesty, for us as Spirit-indwellt children of God, has to be an outworking of a surrendered life. If we are compelled by someone else's rules, by trying to fit in (either with the spiritual or the worldly), if we have any kind of view that is not grounded in the Bible, we all should just want to toss that out the window. Christ has called us to set our affections on things above, not on earthly things.

Okay, so a speaker made this really neat statement and it really pertains to this, especially as we try to figure out our responses to someone who may need obvious teaching in the area of modesty.

The context was the subject of requiring outward compliance of our children, which is going to be necessary, but being satisfied with that (as in, just having them follow RULES), instead of seeing the work that God needs to do in each child's heart. Listen to this:

"We are confusing what the gospel produces with what the gospel requires."
